Redknapp was left fuming over Benitez's claims this week he had deliberately sought to unsettle out-of-sorts Reds striker Robbie Keane with comments aimed at bringing him back to White Hart Lane.

Redknapp said: "The comments I made, there was absolutely nothing wrong with them. I don't know why the manager of Liverpool gets upset about everything - it is strange.

"I said Robbie is a terrific player and a good lad but he belongs to Liverpool so it's not a possibility. It's crazy. I never mentioned I was interested in him. It was never a goer really."

Redknapp revealed there is still no confirmation over the extent of the training-ground injury suffered by Jermain Defoe with the striker yet to go for a scan on his suspected broken foot.

But he praised substitute Darren Bent for his two second-half goals, which came after Davies and Sebastien Puygrenier had put the hosts two ahead, adding: "Darren came on and worked his socks off and, if he does that every week, we haven't got a problem - he'll be fantastic.

"We came back to 2-2 and there was really only one winner at that stage. How were they 2-0 up with two shots on goal? But Kevin Davies comes up and he's fantastic for them."

Meanwhile, Bolton boss Gary Megson revealed his interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso has ended because of the Portuguese club's excessive value of the player.

Megson had eyed Veloso as a possible replacement for Kevin Nolan, who has signed for Newcastle, but said today: "We've been trying for a long time but the amount of money they want, I wouldn't feel comfortable paying that, and nobody else will.

"As far as I'm concerned it's finished. We've got two offers in for two players and interest in two others, and we need to bring them in."

Megson hailed new captain Davies for his two goals and for leading by example, adding: "That's why I made him captain and, even if he hadn't scored two goals today, his performance would have been exemplary.

"He's worked hard, starting at outside right then coming in to put pressure on the Spurs defence. He's led the line brilliantly, scored two goals and he's absolutely marvellous as a captain and as a footballer."

Megson also made a point of hailing the efforts of the Bolton supporters only four days after branding a section of the Trotters travelling fans "pathetic" for barracking him at Blackburn.

Megson added: "Today it was a massive, massive bonus when we were at 2-2 and the supporters stayed with us and got even better, and that enabled us to go on and win the game."
