ADELAIDE United FC Assistant Coach Phil Stubbins has been suspended for six AFC Champions League matches by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Disciplinary Committee.
Stubbins was reported for comments he allegedly made to the referee after midfielder Jonas Salley was sent off just before half time in The Reds opening AFC Champions League 2008 match on March 12 against the Pohang Steelers in South Korea.
The referee made a report against Stubbins resulting in the AFC handing the Assistant Coach a six game ban from the sidelines.
Adelaide United CEO Sam Ciccarello says the club has accepted the sanction against Stubbins and will not appeal the severity of the decision.
“Obviously we are disappointed with the penalty but we will accept the decision of the disciplinary committee and move forward,” Mr Ciccarello said.
“They are the rules that the AFC has put into place so we will abide by them and just get on with trying to win the next three games and to qualify for the Quarter Final Stage of this prestigious competition.”
Stubbins has already served two of the six match penalty and will sit in the stands for the remainder of Adelaide United’s matches in the Group Stage and the first leg of the Quarter Final stage, if United progress past the Group phase.
With the club accepting the punishment and deciding not to appeal, Stubbins and head coach Aurelio Vidmar are turning their attention to Adelaide United’s return match against Becamex Binh Duong at Hindmarsh Stadium in Match 4 of the AFC Champions League 2008 on Wednesday April 23
