Reds Coach Marco Kurz has blasted his Adelaide players as being lazy despite defeating second placed Newcastle Jets 5-1 at Coopers Stadium and moving up to third place on the A-League ladder.
Kurz was not impressed that the Reds had switched off when leading 5-1 and had allowed Jets defender Ben Kantarovski to score late on and make the final score 5-2.
The former Bundesliga coach is known for being a hard task master. Even though Adelaide recorded their biggest win of the season and snapped a four-game winless streak, the German was not in the mood to give compliments to his players.
“I’m not happy and we are too lazy,” he said to Fox Sports after the game.
“I’m not happy with the behaviour after we went to 5-1. They have too many chances and we need every goal.
“Normally if you are 5-1 in front and you play against 10 you can be happy, but I know that when we play next week against Wellington if this same behaviour is on the pitch then maybe it’s difficult.”
A Daniel Adlung brace had Adelaide leading 2-0 at half time with Newcastle looking sluggish and obviously missing Dimi Petratos who is on Socceroos duty and Andrew Nabbout who has left for Japan.
Jets midfielder Ben Kantarovski pulled a goal back for the Jets in the 62nd minute but Adelaide came back with two more goals, the first from Ryan Kitto and then Man of the Match Johan Absalonsen who a scored a first-time volley to make it 4-1.
The night got worse for Newcastle who had Jason Hoffman sent off for a mis-timed tackle after receiving a second yellow card in his 100th game for the Jets.
Just a few moments later in the 79th minute, Slovenian import Cavusevic then put Adelaide up 5-1.
Ben Kantarovski scored his second flicked goal from close range in the 89th minute to make the final score 5-2 and raised the ire of Kurz who said he would wait a few more days before telling off his players.
“I will wait until next week, but for now it’s a good win and good performance from the team,” he said.“It was really good.
"It was not easy to play so compact against Newcastle and score the goals after transition. Congratulations to the whole squad. Today we are happy and tomorrow we start again.”
