Adelaide United 2
Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma 2
Korean champions Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma battled back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw with Adelaide United.
After a scoreless opening half at Hindmarsh Stadium, the South Australian side surged ahead with goals by Fernando and Bruce Djite in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
However, substitute Kim Dong-hun pulled a goal back for Seongnam in the 56th minute before Mota volleyed home a stunning equaliser 15 minutes from time to give the visitors a share of the points.
Seongnam went close to taking the lead after 14 minutes when Kim Do-heon's cross from the right found an unmarked Mota whose free header came back off the left upright.
Choi Sung-kuk proved a handful for the Adelaide defence and the winger turned Aaron Goulding inside out on the right flank in the 17th minute before floating in a cross that was headed over the bar by Itamar.
The home side hit back with Fernando's header forcing a diving save out of Seongnam goalkeeper Kim Yong-dae while Travis Dodd's shot from 20 metres fizzed wide of the left upright.
Kim was called into action again on the half-hour mark as he rushed off his line to close down Nathan Burns as the Adelaide forward nearly broke clear after playing a one-two with Dodd.
Fernando and Mota both put efforts wide for Seongnam in the closing minutes of the half as the two sides went into the break still deadlocked.
However, the home side went in front just three minutes after the interval when Djite's lay-off released Fernando who found space on the edge of the box and fired a hard low shot under the diving body of Kim Yong-dae.
A quickly taken free kick by Seongnam nearly caught out the Adelaide defence but Mota failed to capitalise as he headed wide.
Adelaide took advantage of that let-off and extended their lead in the 55th minute as Dodd received a long pass from skipper Angelo Costanzo on the right of the box and lobbed the ball into the centre where Djite controlled the ball before rifling a volley past Kim.
However, the Adelaide defence fell asleep and allowed Seongnam to pull a goal back a minute later when Choi Sung-kuk slipped a pass through to substitute Kim Dong-hun, who was left completely alone in the box and calmly slotted the ball past Adelaide goalkeeper Robert Bajic.
Seongnam went close to grabbing an equaliser when Kim Do-heon's shot from the edge of box forced a good save out of Bajic while Adelaide had chances to restore their two-goal cushion as Fernando glanced a header wide and an unmarked Djite fired in a volley that was stopped by the legs of Kim Yong-dae.
Those misses would prove costly for Adelaide as the visitors levelled the score in the 75th minute as Mota gathered a pass on edge of box and flicked the ball up before crashing a stunning volley past Bajic.
Both teams had their chances to grab a late winner but failed to capitalise as they settled for a point each in the AFC Champions League Group G encounter.
