ADELAIDE United will tackle A-League new boys North Queensland Fury when the teams head for the Northern Territory for a July date in Darwin.
The encounter is scheduled for Thursday 2 July 2009 at Larrakia Park,
Adelaide United CEO Sam Ciccarello believes it is a fantastic opportunity for the club and the Hyundai A-League to promote the game in the top end of Australia, and give football fans in the region the opportunity to see some first class football.
"This game being played in Darwin is extremely exciting for Adelaide United, the Hyundai A-League and football in the Northern Territory," Ciccarello said.
"We were approached by the main football bodies in both Darwin and Alice Springs being one of the leading Hyundai A-League clubs, and we believe this game against the Fury will give football fans in the Darwin and surrounding areas, a taste of high level football and the chance to see some of the league's elite talent."
"The Northern Territory government and Football Federation Northern Territory should be congratulated on their commitment to bringing two clubs from Australia's best domestic league together this match, and I think this game will significantly raise the exposure of the Hyundai A-League and football in this region."
The match will give Reds Coach Aurelio Vidmar a chance to gauge his side's pre season progress while also getting to see how the Hyundai A-League's new northern Queensland side has come together under Coach Ian Ferguson, the Fury with a talented squad that includes former gun Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler and local Adelaide midfielder Jason Spagnuolo, who left Adelaide United at the end of last season.
Vidmar says the trip will provide numerous benefits for the squad and the club both on and off the field.
"It will be something different for the players, we can see how we're progressing and test ourselves against a side that from all reports will be a very strong team," Vidmar said.
"All of the games leading up to the season are important in trying new things and working on the way we want to try and play this season."
"I don't think many of the boys have been up to Darwin before so it will be something new for us, and it is great that we can take the game up to the Northern Territory and I'm sure there will be a fantastic atmosphere on the night."
The match is the second of United's confirmed friendlies against Hyundai A-League opposition in the lead up to the start of the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 Season, The Reds set to take on Perth Glory at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night, June 26.
During the visit, The Reds will attend a Chief Minister's reception at Parliament House plus make appearances at a number of schools, indigenous communities and shopping centres.
United's travelling party will arrive in Darwin on Tuesday 30 June before returning to Adelaide on Friday 3 July.
