EXCLUSIVE: Adelaide United skipper Travis Dodd says there is a fierce determination to avoid the 'bridesmaids' tag and dodge a third runners-up spot.
The Reds were beaten in the final of the Asian Champions League and narrowly pipped to the premiers plate by Melbourne Victory.
There have been plenty of plaudits but as Dodd and his team prepare for the first leg of their major semi-final against Melbourne Victory, the Reds want a trophy to slot in the Hindmarsh cabinet.
Dodd told au.fourfourtwo.com: "We're pretty confident. We haven't lost a game in a few weeks."
Adelaide haven't beaten Melbourne Victory this season but Dodd said the Reds went into their last game of the regular season knowing they hadn't notched a win against Central Coast either.
They produced a 1-0 win on that occasion, albeit not quite enough to win the premiership. Dodd said: "The history books are there to be re-written for us and we just have to go out there and do it.
"Melbourne are playing away for the first leg and they'll want to get an away goal, no doubt about it. They've played attacking football all year so it's not going to be a surprise for us."
As for finishing the season with a piece of silverware, the United skipper says the players want more than plaudits and memories to show for the last year.
He said: "The only thing missing from us this year is a trophy. We want something to show for it and to not have a trophy after the season we've had would be a big disappointment."
Winning the finals would book another year in the Asian Champions League for the Reds and another hectic schedule. Not that Dodd is complaining at the prospect.
He joked: "We're suffering withdrawl (symptoms) this week having not had a game. Look every club wants to participate in the Champions League so we'll be doing everything we can to get there (again)."
