ADELAIDE United FC’s Youth Team is preparing to travel to Sydney to take on Sydney FC’s Youth squad tomorrow in its first away game of the National Youth League.
After an encouraging opening two matches, which has seen United’s Youth Team secure two clean sheets and score a comprehensive 3-0 win over the Central Coast Mariners, the Round 3 match at Seymour Shaw is set to be The Reds Youth Team’s toughest so far.
Adelaide United Youth Team Coach Joe Mullen said the squad is looking forward to its first away match, and that the game would provide an indication of how his team is progressing.
“We’re looking forward to it and it will be a really good test to see where we are at,” Mullen said.
“I was fairly pleased after the first two games, except for some stages in the second half last Friday, and I know there is still a lot of improvement in us.”
“We will continue to work on things and hopefully once the summer comes around we will get better and better.”
Striker Francesco Monterosso, who scored a double against the Mariners, is again set to lead United’s attack, however he will be without Hyundai A-League strike partner Robert Younis, who will remain in Adelaide with the senior squad.
For tomorrow’s encounter, Mullen and his team will not have any overage players lining up on Saturday, providing a further challenge for the young squad. Mullen has brought in Adelaide United based AIS contracted duo Michael Di Bono and Travis Anderson as well as AIS scholarship holder Ivan Pavlak to fill the remaining three places in the squad for the match against Sydney FC.
Adelaide United’s senior team faces a taxing next fortnight with a match in Queensland followed by the away trip to Tashkent for the 2nd leg of the AFC Champions League Semi Final against Bunyodkor, and Hyundai A-League Coach Aurelio Vidmar is giving his squad the best possible preparation and rest for the tough schedule.
“Not having any of the Hyundai A-League players, it will be a great test for the players,” Mullen said.
“When we contracted players for the Youth Team, we looked at the quality of character as well as the technical ability and I think they’re strong enough mentally to go in there by themselves. It will be a really good challenge for them.”
The only absentee from the Youth Team squad is midfielder Andrew Ciarla, who is still a week away from returning from an ankle injury.
