Beckenbauer blamed Rensing for the last-minute goal his side conceded against Stuttgart last weekend and said he still had to work on certain parts of his game.

But Rensing has taken exception to his comments and hit back.

"His criticism is a load of rubbish," he told the Bild newspaper.

"From the opponents' corner, there were three or four players directly in front of me. I cannot simply push them out of the way.

"Furthermore I was fouled and (Stuttgart goalkeeper) Jens Lehmann confirmed that to me after the game. It was a foul and that is the end of it."

Rensing has inherited the Bayern number one jersey from Oliver Kahn and has become a target for the critics this season.

Much of the responsibility for Bayern's worst start to a Bundesliga season in over 30 years was placed on Rensing's shoulders, but coach Jurgen Klinsmann persisted with him and the champions recovered to trail league leaders Hoffenheim only by goal difference at the midway stage.

Rensing says he is now getting used to being in the firing line.

"At the start of the season, it annoyed me," he said. "But now I know that everybody at the club knows about how to be a goalkeeper and has to keep giving their opinions."

Rensing now hopes to silence his critics during the second half of the season and prove he is a worthy successor to Kahn.

"Obviously, that (becoming Germany's number one) is my long-term aim," he added.

"Whoever is number one at Bayern and, like me, can prove himself here has got to be an option for the national team."
