EXCLUSIVE: Livewire Matildas striker Lisa De Vanna is set for a return to the national team just weeks after her sensational sacking on the eve of May’s friendly with New Zealand.
The Matildas are assembling on the Gold Coast today for their final camp after an intense few months of training at the AIS and on the Central Coast.
We understand that De Vanna is back in the fold although it’s unclear whether she will be with the squad in Queensland or will remain in the US with her club Magic Jack.
De Vanna was booted out of the national team squad hours before last month’s friendly 2-1 victory over New Zealand in Gosford.
The reason was related to numerous breaches of team protocols which team management felt needed addressing. She was sacked just hours before the national team walked out to play the Kiwis at Bluetongue stadium.
The W-League grand final hero for Brisbane Roar immediately left camp and returned to her US club Magic Jack.
De Vanna is no stranger to controversy. Last year, her Facebook page featured what the FFA considered inappropriate, sexually graphic images which were swiftly taken down.
Despite these controversies De Vanna remains one of the quickest and most dangerous players in women’s international football.
If she returns it will surely strengthen Australia’s forward stocks particularly given the untimely ACL injury to central striker Kate Gill.
The squad announcement for the Womens’ World Cup in Germany will be made in the next week or so ahead of the Matildas’ official farewell in Sydney on June 14.
The first group game is two weeks later against world power Brazil. This will be preceded by two warm-up friendlies behind closed doors against Mexico and England in Germany.
A full report on the Matildas with exclusive photoshoot features in this month’s edition of FourFourTwo Australia magazine out now.
