NORWEGIAN based former Socceroo Kasey Wehrman is one of a number of Aussie players who could return next season – including a trio of Romanian-based Australians.
The 32-year-old Indigenous midfielder from Cloncurry in north Queensland, was released by his Norwegian club Fredrikstad at the end of 2009 and is the pick of a batch of Aussies currently club-less.
At the turn of the new millennium, Wehrman was one of the emerging stars of the NSL with high-flying Perth Glory. He joined from Brisbane Strikers where he played alongside up-and-comers such as Jade North and Wayne Srhoj.
Wehrman was considered one of the league's hardest working but creative midfielders and broke into the national team during this period. He last played for the Socceroos in 2006 against Ghana in a friendly after five years out of the national team.
Wehrman has also plied his trade in a low-profile Norwegian career with Moss FK and Lillestrom. Last year the North Queenslander had a short loan spell with Norway's Lyn but a move home to finally play A-League football might not be too far off.
Elsewhere, former Queensland Roar striker Michael Baird was one of three Australians released by Romanian club Universitatea Craiova. Baird recently trialled with the Reds but clearly nothing has come of that move. Craiova also released Josh Mitchell and Josh Rose. Like Wehrman, A-League fans have not seen the pair in action before.
Former Sydney FC man Ruben Zadkovich is another player looking for a club after being released in January following a nightmare stint at Derby County.
With two new clubs joining the A-League in the next year, these are just some of the players that could pop up in season six of the A-League.
