Holman, who returned to Dick Advocaat's AZ side last weekend at Vitesse as a late sub after months out through injury, came off the bench on 86 minutes against Heerenveen before finding his scoring touch in stoppage-time.

With AZ well ahead 3-1, Holman broke into the Heerenveen half, before his attempted cut-back was blocked by Goran Popov, only to fall kindly back to the Aussie who calmly slotted from an angle.

The result bolsters fifth-placed AZ's European push after a slow start to the campaign, as well as Holman's case for a place in Advocaat's first eleven.

Elsewhere in Europe overnight, Scott Chipperfield scored for the second consecutive match since his return from injury, as FC Basel lost 2-1 at home to Grasshoppers in the Swiss Super League.

The veteran Socceroo scored in the 60th minute with a header, with Basel trailing 2-0 at the time.

The tiring Chipperfield had to be replaced on 71 minutes as Basel couldn't conjure up an equaliser, meaning leaders Young Boys can extend their lead to 7 points with victory on Sunday.

In Turkey's Super Lig, Bruce Djite's Diyarbakirspor had their clash with Bursaspor abandoned with the scores at 0-0 after the crowd started throwing objects onto the field injuring press members and a goalkeeper.

Elsewhere in Turkey's top flight, Michael Petkovic did not play again as Sivasspor lost 1-0 at home to Istanbul BB, while James Troisi didn't get a run as Kayserispor came from behind to draw 2-2 with Kasimpasa.

In Greece's Super League, Craig Moore put in a full shift for Kavala as they drew 1-1 with Aris Saloniki.

In Croatia's Prva HNL, Josip Skoko played a full game as Hajduk Split won 3-0 at Inter Zapresic.
