AFTER being called up for national team duty for the first time in almost 12 months, young Australian Rhys Williams says he now wants to cement his place as a Socceroos starter.
Williams, 22, hasn't been involved with the Socceroos since a pelvis injury saw him miss the final cut of the Australia squad at the 2010 World Cup.
The Middlesbrough defender/midfielder has never worked under current Socceroos boss Holger Osieck either, having missed most of this season with the same injury before his successful comeback for Boro in March.
Now, Williams, who has attracted attention from Premier League club Bolton, is keen to win over Osieck and become a regular in the Socceroos starting eleven.
“I’m ready mentally and physically and I’m ready to show the manager I want a place in the team,” Williams told The West Australian.
“I don’t just want to be a bit-part player.”
Perth-born Williams hasn't played for Australia since November 2009, when he was sent off against Oman.
Williams has three Socceroos caps to his name, having made his debut in June 2009 against Japan.
