It is becoming extremely likely Perth Glory and Socceroo Rhys Williams will be departing the west at the end of this season.
It has been reported by FoxSports over the course of this season Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers and Newcastle Jets were interested in the defender but Melbourne Victory are strongly tipped to poach the Roo.
Glory came away with a 2-0 win over Melbourne City on Sunday in the elimination final as Williams came on for Richard Garcia in the 66th minute and he said wasn’t given a reason by coach Kenny Lowe as to why he wasn’t in the starting line-up.
“I was expecting to start to be honest, I’m disappointed and he (Lowe) still hasn’t said anything so I’m pretty upset about it,” Williams said post-match.
“It’s not nice to be on the bench, I’m really disappointed with that but the boys have done great and we look forward to next week.”
Pressed for more answers Williams had an ironic smile on his face as he said “that’s it”, ending the interview and walked to the team bus after the game.
Williams’ future is set to be announced after the finals according to agent Tony Rallis as the Socceroo has managed 16 games for Glory since leaving now Premier League strugglers Middlesbrough.
FourFourTwo contacted Rallis who agreed his player was unhappy not to have started and said he would be on the Eastern Seaboard next season.
Rallis also said Perth have not made an official offer to keep him there next season.
Lowe explained it was more to do with fitness in regards to Williams’ bench start.
“Rhys’ last game was the 11th, he’s played one full game since the 12th March, that’s six weeks,” Lowe said.
“He’s not going to go and play 90 minutes… We had Chrissy (Harold) with a quad, Nebo (Marinkovic) with a groin.
“Rhysy with limited game time and training, he’s been ill as well and been injured, Socceroos duty, so that’s a tough one for him, Bran (Wilson) has got a bad back.
“None of those could play 90, if I played any of those, my subs were already made, so I couldn’t do it.
“So I said ‘OK, they’re ready, once we get over 50 (minutes) they’re going to last till 120, so I’m boxed off.
“I think it’s limited game time, hopefully, what do you do? Leave people out who’ve played unbelievably well? I’ll let you tell them that.”
Last Friday it was also reported Glory and owner Tony Sage wants to keep Williams at the club but have put talks off until the end of the side’s season.
FourFourTwo contacted Glory for comment and a spokesperson said: “Rhys is a contracted player and as you saw yesterday is part of the squad and just like all players, is an important part of a prospective championship team.”
Glory travel to Sydney to meet the Sky Blues in the semi-final on Saturday night.
