Victory are yet to confirm the extent of the calf injury which forced the 14-time Socceroo out of the 3-2 extra-time win over Sydney FC pre-game at Allianz Stadium.

The Melbourne will likely reveal injury details on Monday, but Williams is expected to miss a month, at the very least, ruling him out of Socceroos calculations.

The 29-year-old, who joined Victory from Perth Glory in the off-season, had put together an outstanding 2017/18 campaign at centre-back.

Williams is a favourite to be part of the Professional Footballers’ Australia Team of the Season to be named next week, having made 32 appearances in all competitions.

The ex-Middlesbrough man seemed to be back in Socceroos’ calculations ahead of the World Cup given his form and Australia’s lack of quality defensive options.

Speaking after Saturday’s semi-final win, Victory coach Kevin Muscat said: “I haven’t had a chance to speak to the medical staff.

“Rhys was a big blow for us. He’s been outstanding this season. I’m more disappointed for him.

Pim Verbeek had to cut Rhys Williams from his final 2010 World Cup squad

“He certainly deserved to be on that stage tonight. He’s been a premium performer all season.”

The timing of the injury is the latest cruel piece of luck for Williams, who missed both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups due to injury.

In 2010, Williams missed out due to a pelvic problem, while four years later he was ruled out with an Achilles injury.

Williams’ career has been plagued by injuries, managing less than 150 appearances for Middlesbrough during his eight years with the English club.

An Achilles injury playing for Middlesbrough meant Rhys Williams missed the 2014 World Cup
