Perth controlled the play for most of the night and had 13 shots to Wellington's six, but the Phoenix did have chances to come away with more from the match.

Their first came in the eighth minute when Louis Fenton got on the end of a probing Jeremy Brockie ball, but his volley from just a few yards lacked the power to beat Danny Vukovic.

Brockie sprayed a shot over the crossbar when he was left unmarked in the Glory 18-yard box towards the end of the first half.

Substitute Tyler Boyd had a chance to steal it late against the run of play as Perth searched for a winner, but Vukovic had his shot covered.

Herbert said he had mixed feelings about winning a point.

"We started really bright tonight, two really good chances and away to Perth if you can put them away it makes it even a little bit more easier for you," he said.

"It became a contest, but we had real good chances tonight and to finish strongly it was a real positive after beating Newcastle and international players being away in China.

"I thought we were a really good shot tonight and I said to the players I think we've travelled well ... the two chances we created early were signs of that.

"If we were a little bit more ruthless in that front third maybe the result could have been a little bit different."

The draw with Perth means that Wellington take four points from a tough two-week road trip to Newcastle and Perth.

Herbert paid tribute to the Phoenix owners, who financed the team to stay in Australia for the week to help their preparation.

"The owners have done a terrific job in letting us stay for the week and that's to be hugely acknowledged from all of us and gave us time to settle and work on things we thought we could exploit," Herbert said.

"The mindset of the club is no excuses. We've got a group of players who are extremely dedicated to having a successful year.

"If you've got Newcastle and Perth on the bounce you've got to deal with it. I think four points on the road anybody would take."

The Phoenix now have two matches at home against Western Sydney and Sydney FC.
