The Red Devils drew 0-0 with Jose Mourinho's Inter side on Tuesday in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League clash and now have to ensure they beat the Serie A title holders on March 11 to progress.

United were by far the better side at the San Siro and England defender Ferdinand feels their performance warranted victory.

Asked if he was disappointed the team had not found the net, Ferdinand told Radio Five Live: "Yes, a bit to be honest. Especially the way the game panned out.

"We tried to go out there and take it to them and we thought we did that in every department other than scoring a goal which was disappointing.

"To go to the San Siro and play against a team who are dominating their league the way they are - for the last three years they have been champions and look as though they are going to win it again this year - and to completely outplay them on their own patch I think is testament to how far we have come as a squad.

"A few unsung heroes like Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick really proved their worth in such a high-profile game."

United squandered a number of chances in Italy and a 0-0 scoreline could lead to a nervous return leg but Ferdinand is thinking positive.

"That is not the way we are thinking," he continued. "Hopefully we can be on the front foot again and hopefully be the team putting the problems to Inter Milan.

"But as you know in big games like these anything can happen and any little detail determines the results of these games so we have to make sure we are the team that have prepared the best and go out there and do the job and get the win we need."
