Carlos Tevez's first-half goal, sweeping home a scuffed Wayne Rooney shot, was enough to see Sir Alex Ferguson's side win and take three points.

And Ferdinand told Sky Sports 1: "Anfield is a hard place to come, they defend very well and there is pressure all over the park. Today we dealt with everything they threw at us and got the goal.

"They are a very good side. One moment of brilliance, Wazza's shot deflecting to Carlos - well it was a bit fortunate but we'll take that.

"The whole team defended, closed them down, and everything they did get into the box we dealt with.

"I think you can tell from the reaction of the lads after, and the fans, it's a great feeling to come to Anfield and win."

Ferguson conceded his side had not displayed their usual attacking flair but believes such a hotly-anticipated fixture is more about the result than performance.

"It was a typical United v Liverpool game. The crowd creates such a noise it is difficult for the referee," he told Sky Sports 1.

"It's not about playing flowing football, it's about winning the game.

"I said before the game that the games between the top sides will be important so it's great for us."

And while Ferguson does not expect the title to be decided just yet, he believes if the Red Devils can start 2008 close to the summit they could retain their Barclays Premier League title.

"It's going to be a long struggle and fight throughout the season but if we get to New Year's Day top or around there we have an outstanding chance of staying there."

Reds boss Rafael Benitez said on Sky Sports 1: "We had our chances and didn't take them. They had just one, and that was the difference.

"In the second half we saw they were compact, working hard in defence, trying to play the counter. In the second half we had two or three chances and for me, that was the difference.

"When you play United you know you cannot create a lot."

Asked where they fell short in attack, Benitez said: "The corners. The second balls at corners. In this kind of game you know you won't have too many (chances).

"We knew we needed to win this game if we wanted to be closer. There is a long way, we just have to keep going."
