EXCLUSIVE: Young Socceroos coach Jan Versleijen says it's a long time since the under-20's side had such a spectacular attacking line-up - and he might just be right.
With preparations in full swing for next month's AFC U/19 Championships, Versleijen's attack looks to be the side's strong suit.
It features current A-League top scorer Matthew Leckie of Adelaide United, rising star and Socceroo Tommy Oar from Utrecht, Sunderland's targetman Matthew Fletcher and gifted Central Coast playmaker Mustafa Amini.
Add to this quartet Kofi Danning, Eli Babalj and Kerem Bulut and the Young Socceroos loom as one of the most potent attacking forces in the U/20 team's history.
"Absolutely. It's a long time since a national team had so many choices up front. And some good quality," Versleijen told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"Oar is already overseas, Leckie is a rising star in the A-League, Fletcher is doing well."
Although Babalj played the out-and-out striker role in Thursday's 1-0 loss to Central Coast in a training friendly, Fletcher would appear to be a key to the 4-2-3-1 system.
A powerful but skilful striker who has been compared in style to Mark Viduka, he should be able to hold up the ball with the likes of Amini, Leckie and Oar playing off him.
If that foursome hits its straps, this could be a very exciting period for the Young Socceroos.
"When you have someone like Mustafa playing in behind Fletcher, he has a good feeling to support the striker," said Versleijen, who hailed Amini's display against the Mariners.
Despite his occasional frustration at players' decision-making during Thursday's friendly, Versleijen likes the look of this group.
What is also giving rise to optimism is that a number of this squad have worked with the Dutchman at last year's World Youth Cup. His philosophy is starting to take hold in this generation of players.
And Versleijen was also happy with the defensive side of his team after their loss to the Mariners.
"In the first half, [Patrizio] Perez almost didn't get the ball. I think the backline did quite well," he said.
"Today we played a 4-3-3 but Central Coast played with a diamond so their wingers tucked in a little more so when you lose the ball you have to bring your wingers inside so you close down the space in the middle."
The squad leaves for Hong Kong this Saturday where they will be based for a few days before heading to China. The AFC U-19 Championship finals will be held in Zibo, China, from 3-17 October.
The Young Socceroos have been drawn in Group D with Yemen, Korea Republic and IR Iran.
The Aussies will play their opening match against Yemen on Monday 4 October, followed by IR Iran on Wednesday 6 October with their final group match against the Korea Republic on Friday 8 October.
With encouraging words from Socceroo coach Holger Osieck at training earlier in the week, there's a good feeling in the Young Socceroo camp.
Versleijen added: "What I say to them is you have good individual quality. The challenge is to bond as a team and go with the attitude, ‘hey, we want to qualify and go to the World Cup'."
