EXCLUSIVE: au.fourfourtwo.com' - a voice for fans on the terraces - spoke with one Brisbane Roar fan who made his way to Bluetongue stadium on Saturday to see Roar defeat the Mariners 3-2.
Before the game we asked James Price, one of Roar's 100 or so travelling fans at Bluetongue, his thoughts on the club and what he'd like to see in the future. And, of course, losing Charles Miller.
Charlie, sorry Charles, Miller. Should he have been allowed to go?
It's hard to know. What was the actual situation? Was he told he wouldn't have a contract? It didn't really seem like that.
So are the fans slightly confused about the circumstances of his departure?
I think so. But the fact that he went straight away to another club and was playing with them a week later... it did not feel right by us. So we're definitely not happy with him. Whether we can complain to the club about letting him go, there's no point in a player not interested in playing for your team. But definitely we'd have hoped there'd be a clause saying he wouldn't go to one of our major rivals. I don't think Charlie Miller would've ever considered going to Celtic. Our history may be nowhere near that but we'd hope in the future... when you go to our arch-rivals - our closest team...
Miller is set to line-up against Roar on Boxing Day. What sort of reception will he get from the travelling Roar faithful?
Frosty to say the least. We've got a few chants lining up so he'll definitely be copping it from us all day.
Your thoughts on new coach Ange Postecoglou?
He's coached youth teams in the Australian system so it's what he's good at and what he's used to. It's good to see, I mean Tommy Oar's one of the best youth players around. But Frank Farina was good with the youth players too. Zullo came through under him. The club like the youth policy, it's good to see because youth is the future of the game.
Farina. Much of a loss?
Obviously he was liked by the players and the fans. But the owners I think wanted a change. Once Lawrence Oudendyk [former CEO] left, the new owners wanted to stamp their own authority on the club. I think they're Greek owners and now we have a coach with a Greek background. I don't think the connection is unmissable.
The crowds at Suncorp - it was a terrific number midweek against Fury but generally there's been an alarming drop-off this season. Talk us through that and can you give us the reasons...
It was definitely the prices. We complained at the start of the year about our membership prices and thankfully they listened and at least we got some cheap areas for members to sit in - especially in the Den area; the main supporters area. And it didn't help that our home form wasn't great.
Our two big home crowds before Fury [last Wednesday] were losses. We had 20,000 for the first game. I asked friends if they wanted to go and they saw the prices and said, 'no, are you kidding?' If we'd won that match, things might have been different.
Steve Guise [Roar marketing manager] is trying to connect the fans [with the club] and he's always happy for ideas and improve things. But certainly, once you lose fans it's hard to get them back than to keep them. Even in the Den area, a lot of people running the show left and left a bit of a gap. It's been tough.
How do you think Brisbane Roar as a club has finished 2009 compared to this time last year?
You can't say it's in a stronger position because of the ladder position and we've lost some quality players. But that's not to say it's not the right decision because change had to happen and it's nice to get some change after a couple of years. And we had the change of coach. I'm not necessarily unhappy with where the club's at but it was much better last year and we seemed in better form and more likely to win. But having the 'M n Ms' [McKay and Murdocca] back now makes a massive difference.
Describe what it's like being a Brisbane Roar supporter.
Frustrating. They put on a great performance one week and the other they're absolutely honking. And you get sick of losing to teams at Suncorp.
Speaking of Suncorp, how is it as a stadium for A-League fans to watch football?
It's a great venue when it's full. But the security side... as an example, we've just walked in here today [at Bluetongue] with banners - they're pretty cool. At Suncorp, it's just so much hassle, it's not funny. And we're always under constant threat of getting kicked out. I can only assume it's a state-run stadium whereas here it's a football club - the Mariners basically run the place and understand what happens and is required at a football club.
Your best player(s) so far this season?
Tommy Oar. Henrique's been fantastic for someone who just seemed to fall over a lot last season. De Vere's been good, too. Moore, without him we would've probably conceded more goals and he seems sharper when he comes back from Socceroo games.
Reddy compared to McMaster in goal. Your thoughts.
I think Griffin is a better shot stopper but Reddy was better on his feet. Combine the two and we'd have a great keeper. Major loss? I don't think so. Griffin's proved himself.
How did you get here and how long did it take to get to Gosford?
We drove. It was about nine or ten hours. Then I'm staying with family a few hours north. A family and football trip.
As a fan, if you could tell your club one thing ahead of next season, what would that be?
I think we need a marquee player. I'd like to see Craig Moore come under the normal salary cap. But a marquee like an attacking midfielder and scores goals. Someone like Robbie Fowler who can attract the fans; someone along those lines - and to keep going with the increased marketing and keep the prices down.
And where do you get your football information from?
FourFourTwois the one I check the most. It covers other leagues as well and generally the reports are a good source of information. They're on the ball and things get updated quick so I'm quite happy with that. Just get the Brisbane Roar blog writers to do some bloody work for a change!
