Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi felt his side deserved to walk away from Suncorp Stadium with three points after being held to a 1-1 draw by Western Sydney on Friday night.
Having opened the scoring the hosts had multiple chances to go two goals to the good during a period of dominance but failed to take advantage, with the Wanderers instead squaring the ledger.
Striker Jamie Maclaren had a couple of late chances to give his side the win and the Wanderers were reduced to ten men in stoppage time but the Roar couldn’t make it count.
“We’re disappointed we didn’t take the three points,” Aloisi told Fox Sports post-match.
“I thought that especially the first 20 minutes it was an arm-wrestle, there were a lot of second balls, there wasn’t really any flow to the game.
“There was a lot of pressure involved but then once we started getting on top of them towards the end of the first half and beginning of the second half we played some great stuff.
“It was probably some of the best football we’ve played in a long time.”
Brisbane’s opener came courtesy of a beautifully worked play, with midfielder Thomas Broich again the architect when he picked out the run of Corey Brown.
The defender still had it all to do but connected sweetly with the ball as he swarmed towards goal, sending it thundering into the top corner.
“We worked on it during the week," Aloisi revealed.
"We worked on our fullbacks going high because we know the way Western Sydney defend and thought that we could exploit that.
“It was hard to get control of the ball in the first half. There was not much space in the midfield ntil the last 10 minutes of that first half. Once that happened we knew we would start to create chances.
“We’re disappointed but we’re pleased about the performance but hopefully next week we can match performance with a result.”
The point sees Brisbane move up to second spot on the ladder - stretching their unbeaten run to ten matches - but both Melbourne sides are close behind with games in hand.
“We’d like to be higher of course but we said at the beginning of the season that we’ll be building into this one. Each game we’ll improve," said Aloisi.
“We’re doing that but we know there’s still room for improvement.
“We’re getting better and in the New Year Brett Holman will start to come back, Arana is starting to get his fitness so we’ll get stronger.”
