BRISBANE Roar can confirm captain Matt Smith will miss the remainder of the current Hyundai A-League season after having surgery on his hip injury today.
Smith hasn’t played or trained in over four weeks with his hip labrum tear keeping him out of action for the club since the 1-0 loss to Newcastle Jets in mid-January.
After a review with the surgeon on Monday, it was decided late yesterday afternoon that surgery was Smith’s best option.
With an estimated three to four months recovery time, the 30-year-old is no chance to play any more part in Brisbane’s 2012/13 season.
“I am bitterly disappointed to be out for the rest of the season,” Smith said. “I am still confident the rest of the boys can finish off the season well and I’m now firmly focused on working hard in my recovery.”
The rest of the Roar squad is currently in Thailand preparing for tonight’s AFC Champions League qualifier against Buriram United before returning home to play Wellington Phoenix at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
