EXCLUSIVE: Brisbane Roar say they’ll retain virtually all their championship winning squad for the upcoming A-League and ACL despite the impending loss of striker Jean Carlos Solorzano to Melbourne Victory.
“We’re a progressive club and if we feel it’s the right time for the boys to move on, we’d support them and won’t hold them back,” Roar CEO Peter McLennan told au.fourfourtwo.com.
“But where we are right now, I don’t see any reason why we won’t have 85-90 percent of this squad over the next 18 months."
Solorzano, 23, was due to head home to Costa Rica shortly but is reported to be close to signing with Victory where he would hook up with two other talented Ticos in Marvin Angulo and Carlos Hernandez.
“We’d love to keep Nico [Solorzano] but reality is within the salary cap it will be difficult to hold onto him for sure,” said McLennan, who sounded resigned to losing a striker who scored 11 goals in 25 appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
“I haven’t got the indication from anyone that they want to go. And we’re getting approaches from players who want to come here.”
The question of capitalising on the club’s amazing recent success has been posed by media and fans since the club triumphed in front of 50,000 fans against Central Coast in the greatest ever A-League grand final on March 13.
The club has had planning meetings to map out timelines for what they hope will be a busy off-season of activities.
“We’re mindful of that [capitalising on the success]. We won’t let it fade out of sight,” promised McLennan.
The club has continued with its community focus, taking the A-League trophy on a tour of Brisbane clubs and their road-shows at local clubs will continue as will flood relief promotions in places like Toowoomba.
However FFA officials arrive at the club this week ahead of the changeover of ownership to the national governing body on April 1.
However McLennan is bullish about the club’s ability to raise revenue and investment over the coming months.
The Clem Jones Group has been flagged as potential investors but McLennan didn’t want to comment as he has not been involved in any negotiations.
Roar’s pre-season begins on May 2 and the club is planning an Asian tour to help prepare the team for their first ever Asian Champions League campaign in 2012.
The club is hopeful of securing international opposition at home during the off-season with the help of the Queensland state government.
McLennan says expressions of interest in Roar memberships have been very encouraging with over 1600 already registering interest.
Memberships won’t be released until the draw is made for next season but it already compares well with last season when the club had around 1800 members.
“It’s all been a little surreal to be honest,” said McLennan.
“But for the staff we’ve gotten straight back into it. There’s no real downtime for us even though the players are on holidays.”
He added: “We’ve got a lot, a lot of interest from new corporates. The club’s never been in a better position and we’re certainly seeing some good early indicators.”
