Newcastle’s impressive start to the new A-league season continued with a 2-1 victory over a struggling Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.
Roy O’Donovan and Dimitri Petratos shared the goals for the visitors, with the latter scoring an impressive strike from outside the penalty area.
The Jets now sit in second place on the ladder, while the Roar prop up the table – losing three out of three.
BRISBANE ROAR
Michael Theo 6.5
There was absolutely nothing Theo could do about Petratos’ strike, but the Brisbane goalkeeper will be disappointed with his performance overall.
Corey Brown 6.5
Brown’s night was cut short by a hamstring injury, early in the second half.

Luke Devere 7
The strongest of the Brisbane defenders on the night, keeping an in-form Roy O’Donovan at arm’s length. Won most of his aerial challenges and lead by example.
Avraam Papadopoulos 6.5
Completely lost sight of Roy O’Donovan for the opening goal and endured a tireless battle for 90 minutes with the Irishman.
Jade North 6.5
Struggled at right-back, particularly against Ivan Vujica in the opening minutes of the first half. Was probably thankful to be switched to left-back before half-time, where he looked more comfortable away from the threat of the Croat.
Matt McKay 7
The attacking ability in the Newcastle midfield proved to be too much for McKay, who was continuously swamped by the visiting midfield. However, the Brisbane captain pulled the strings when the ball was at his feet and rarely misplaced a pass.
Joe Caletti 6.5
Played well when in possession, but much like his midfield partner, Caletti was outnumbered in the centre of the field.
Eric Bautheac 6
The 30-year-old was substituted at half-time, after failing to make much of an impact on the game.
Brett Holman 7.5
Turned Brisbane’s possession into attack singlehandedly on some occasions, often by running the ball at the Newcastle defence. Much to his frustration, his teammates failed to convert his efforts.

Fahid Ben Khalfallah 7
The Tunisian was inconsistent throughout, sometimes linking well with Massimo Maccarone and sometimes wasting possession with inaccurate passes and crosses.
Massimo Maccarone 7.5
The Italian would have been disappointed not to have scored in the first half, after turning his defender. The 38-year-old later found the back of the net with a brilliant effort, which was eventually overturned by the VAR system for offside.

NEWCASTLE JETS
Jack Duncan 7
Without having to make any world-class saves, the Newcastle keeper would have kept a clean sheet if it wasn’t for Nigel Boogaard’s own goal. Just another day at the office for Duncan.
Ivan Vujica 8.5
Provided a cross of real quality to the back post, where Roy O’Donovan arrived for Newcastle’s first goal. The Croat continued to be a threat throughout the match and linked up well with Andrew Nabbout.
Nikolai Topor-Stanley 7
Was often one step ahead the Brisbane attack. The defender also looked composed on the ball and tried to turn defence into attack.

Nigel Boogaard 6
Clumsily turned the ball into his own net for Brisbane’s first goal and should have dealt better with the cross. Endured a close battle with Maccarone and the Italian often got the better of the Jets defender.
Daniel Georgievski 6.5
Took zero chances at right back and was consistent alongside his fellow defenders.
Steven Ugarkovic 7
A strong, well-composed performance from the 23-year-old. Rarely out of position and retained possession by breaking up Brisbane’s loose passes.
Ronald Vargas 7.5
Was at the heart of countless Newcastle attacks and should have bagged a goal for his personal tally. Unfortunately, the Venezuelan suffered a horrific injury in the second half and was stretchered off the field of play.
Ben Kantarovski 7.5
Picked up an early yellow card and had to tread lightly for a majority of the game. Despite his early caution, the midfielder was never far from the ball and managed to avoid a further booking.
Andrew Nabbout 7
Should have buried the game with a chance in the 58th minute – finding space inside the Brisbane penalty area. Instead of finding the back of the net, Nabbout fired his shot wide of the target. Overall, an encouraging performance.

Dimitri Petratos 8.5
Was given heaps of space on the edge of the box, before thumping the ball into the top corner. The resulting celebration was fairly muted from the former Roar player, who was arguably the most exciting player on the pitch.
Roy O’Donovan 7
Lost his marker at the back post and converted Vujica’s low cross from close range. Failed to present himself with many other chances, but keeps his goal-scoring form on track.
