Roar and Central Coast were equal top heading into round three, with both teams as yet undefeated in season two. They signalled their winning intent from the outset, with the frenetic pace and on-target shots forcing both goalkeepers to pull off impressive saves to keep the teams scoreless before half time.

The game looked set to finish with a hard-fought draw, despite both teams coming agonisingly close to scoring countless times, until Sasha McDonnell, who had subbed on only moments earlier, found the back of the net late in the second half.

One goal was also enough for Sydney FC to record their second consecutive win, this time over intrastate rivals Newcastle, who remain winless in season two. Second cousins Kyah and Gema Simon faced off against each other, with the former playing for Sydney and the latter playing for Newcastle, while striker Sarah Walsh, who'd scored twice in the opening two rounds, withdrew late due to injury.

But even without Walsh, Sydney's depth of talent was apparent. It took last season's golden boot winner Leena Khamis just five minutes to score from what appeared an innocuous cross when she beat Newcastle goalkeeper Alison Logue to the ball.

Two was the magic number in the remaining W-League matches, with Melbourne Victory defeating Adelaide United 2-0 at Hindmarsh Stadium and Perth Glory and Canberra United sharing the spoils with a 2-2 draw in Perth.

A dominant Melbourne Victory found its first goal just before the half hour mark, with Katrina Gorry's shot coasting past stationary goalkeeper Sian McLaren. Second-half substitute Selin Kurulay slotted in Melbourne's second, match-sealing goal in the final 10 minutes with a shot from outside the box that cleared McLaren's outstretched arm and hit the middle of the net.

Canberra United, used to cool ACT conditions, overcame scorchingly hot 37-degree weather to eke out a 2-2 draw. With two goals in the opening 10 minutes, Perth appeared to have the game in the bag, but Canberra found two of their own in the remaining 80 minutes.

Perth's first goal came after Lisa de Vanna was fouled in the box by Ellie Brush and Collette McCallum, who scored Perth's stellar, in-swinging corner goal in round two, slotted home the penalty. Marianna Tabain scored Perth's second goal shortly afterwards much to her and everyone else's surprise when an attempted clearance by Canberra ricocheted off her and over goalkeeper Lydia Williams' head.

Canberra clawed their way back into the game after the shellshock start, with Taiwanese international Shu O Tseng, who sports distinctive purple hair, seizing on a loose ball to score in the 61st. Canberra continued to chase an equaliser, with Ashleigh Sykes' 82nd-minute header proving too good for goalkeeper Emma Wirkus and levelling the scores. The draw gives the winless Canberra its first points of the season.

Round 4 sees Sydney FC host the undefeated league leaders Roar Women, Canberra take on fellow cool weather team Melbourne Victory, while Adelaide host Perth, and Newcastle take on the Central Coast Mariners in a local derby
