ROBBIE Fowler appears to be in no rush to decide where he will play his football next season but Sydney FC is not yet out of the running.
Reports in the South Wales press today claim that it could be as late as next month before the 32-year-old decides which of the numerous offers on the table to accept, including that of Sydney.
But Sydney FC's top brass have told au.fourfourtwo.com they are confident of hearing from Robbie Fowler within days
Fowler spent part of last week in Sydney being wooed by club officials before heading back to England and then on to Portugal for a holiday.
It is thought the number of clubs wanting to sign Fowler is approaching double figures with Cardiff City, Leicester City and Glasgow Rangers all thought to be in the running for the player.
However, the player’s agent George Scott today told the Western Mail newspaper: “He (Fowler) is not in a mood to be rushed. He is considering eight offers at the moment but the phone is always ringing and there is plenty of interest.”
While all the clubs chasing the former Liverpool man will be anxious to tie up a deal as quickly as possible, the player is free to keep his options open until the summer transfer window slams shut on August 31.
But Sydney are still hopeful of hearing from the Liverpool legend before the start of their A-League season on August 24 against Central Coast Mariners.
CEO George Perry revealed today: “We said goodbye to Robbie on Monday at lunchtime and he said he’d come back to us within a few days.
“He was certainly very impressed with what he saw and his advisor was also very impressed.
“We’ve put our best foot forward and we’ve made sure we’ve done as much as we can for him. We’ll continue to work on it until he makes his decision.”
The player’s agent Scott told the Welsh newspaper: “Sydney is still in there, we felt we should go out there at least.
“They had come to Liverpool and we thought it polite to take up their offer to go there.”
Sydney FC coach Branko Culina is similarly hopeful of Fowler joining the club which now only has room for a marquee player and a pair of U-20s.
“Our salary cap is such that we can’t sign anyone else. The only room we have is for a marquee player and two U-20s so that’s what we’re focusing on,” he admitted.
“Unfortunately that’s the situation we were put in by previous management so if we can get those we’ll be happy with that,” he said.
While cautious, Culina is still hopeful that Fowler is able to see the benefits of living in Australia over joining one of the many English clubs also chasing his signature.
“Until the fat lady sings it’s not over. It’s always going to be touch and go with people like Fowler, Philip Cocu and all of those.
“They’re the kind of people that will always have some kind of offer. Geographically we are in a difficult situation in Australia. Unless you’ve got an affinity with Australia it may be difficult for us to attract the really high-profile players.
“Robbie Fowler is keen on the venture but he needs to talk it over with his family and make a decision,” he said.
“Robbie is his own man. But talking to him and his manager, I can assure you that they have done a lot of research.
“They knew a lot more about Sydney FC than we thought they did. It’s not even about the money that it boils down to but it’s whether he wants to uproot the family.
“He’s got four young kids under the age of seven… time will tell. I think we’ll know in the next couple of days anyway. While I’m hoping I don’t want to be overly confident.”
Cardiff City are believed to have put forward a strong financial package for the player but new Leicester City supremo Milan Mandaric is also keen to attract Fowler to his club.
Fowler himself has said that he needs time to make the right decision for himself and his family.
Sydney FC will play Phoenix at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium on Sunday in the Pre-Season Cup.
