David Carney admits the chance to work alongside Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson was the driving force behind his decision to leave A-League side Sydney FC and make the switch to Bramall Lane.
The 23-year-old Australia international was given the go-ahead to discuss a move to the Coca-Championship after Sydney executives initially denied his request discuss a move to England.
Carney, who featured in two of Australia's games at last month's AFC Asian Cup in a left-sided defensive role, is believed to have already agreed a three-year deal with the Blades
"There was interest from the Premier League clubs but the big reason that I chose Sheffield United is that the club is ambitious and Bryan Robson has shown faith in my ability," Carney revealed.
"He followed my performances at the Asian Cup. He prefers me as a creative player rather than a defender."
Carney was the driving force in the Sydney midfield that won the inaugural A-League title 2005 after spending time in Everton's youth team alongside Wayne Rooney.
He spent time in England and Scotland with Oldham, Halifax and Hamilton after leaving Goodison Park before returning to his home-town club.
