EXCLUSIVE: Central Coast Mariners young gun Tom Rogic could be at the centre of the A-League’s first full-blown bidding war with interest now coming from Spain.
Rogic is being courted by three English Premier League clubs Reading, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers and has spent the last few days training with Glasgow giants, Celtic.
Mariners confirmed that Harry Redknapp’s Rangers lodged a “formal letter” with the club overnight and that another EPL offer was expected tonight.
A source close to the player told au.fourfourtwo.com that a La Liga club is the latest to enter the market for the rising midfield star.
The 20-year-old has been trialling with Celtic at their training base in Marbella, Spain, which may have sparked the Spanish interest.
A-League clubs have tried to outbid each other for international stars such as Harry Kewell and David Beckham, but Rogic could be the first home-grown talent to provoke a chequebook war among overseas clubs.
Initial reports suggested Rogic may be lured away from the defending Premiers for $600,000 but since then Queen's Park Rangers have reportedly tabled a $700,000 offer.
One Scottish news source dubbed Rogic the “Aussie superkid” and said Celtic were keen to add the playmaker to their roster.
“We like the look of him, like the cut of him,” manager Neil Lennon told the Daily Record.
“Reading were interested but we stole a march on them so we will see how he does. We’re hoping to get him back to Glasgow for another week.
“I think he’s worth the money from what I’ve seen but I’d like to have a proper look before we decide.”
Rogic has enjoyed a meteoric rise since being plucked from virtual obscurity to join the Nike Academy after winning The Chance football talent search in 2010.
Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull declined to go into specifics of contractual negotiations but confirmed the interest from QPR.
Turnbull told au.fourfourtwo.com: "We can confirm that QPR have provided a formal letter overnight and another is expected tonight from another Premier League Club.
“Glasgow Celtic appear to have been impressed with Tom during his stay in Spain, and have requested that Tom travel back to Glasgow with them to view their facilities, and see Glasgow first-hand.
“It is not surprising to see Tom in such demand, and from such big clubs. We are proud to have been able to give Tom this opportunity, and are especially pleased to see the quality of the clubs that have shown interest in him and subsequently the Central Coast Mariners.”
It is understood the Gosford outfit want a formal offer tabled from Celtic before granting permission for Rogic to travel back to the club’s Lennoxtown complex.
If that offer doesn’t materialise overnight Rogic could find himself in the centre of a tug-o-war with Mariners coach Graham Arnold keen to have the player back home for Saturday’s F3 derby clash against Newcastle Jets as originally planned.
Meanwhile Rogic’s agent, Andrew Bernal, is playing his cards close to his chest saying the player was “enjoying training at Celtic”.
