Rojas won the Johnny Warren medal in A-League season 2012-13 when the Kiwi left Melbourne Victory to pursue opportunities in Europe.

He now returns to Victory looking to reignite his career after a stint with German side Stuttgart, during which time went on loan to Greuther Furth and Swiss side FC Thun.

The 24-year-old suffered a foot injury at the beginning of his stint in Germany and managed little game time in the first team.

After getting 37 games while on loan in Switzerland, Rojas said the ultimate decision to come back to the A-League was “easy”.

“No regrets, alright, it didn’t go perfectly, but I learnt a lot and that’s the most important thing. That’s what I went there to do, I went there to learn and to become a better player and because it’s the place everyone wants to be at,” he said.

“Everyone wants to go to Europe and the Bundesliga is a strong league, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy and I had a lot to learn and I’m not over the moon about how it all went, I’m positive what I learnt from there will only benefit me next season.

“It just wasn’t ideal, it wasn’t the best situation. I realised I was surplus to the club and when that happens it’s not a good place to be and I’m still wanting to get better as a footballer.

“I need to learn and I didn’t think it was the right place for me to do that. It’s pretty much when I decided it’s time to come back.”

Victory’s squad from 2012-13 has vastly changed over the years, with Leigh Broxham, Lawrence Thomas, Nick Ansell, Jason Geria and Scott Galloway are the only players remaining.

Rojas had a stellar season in Europe where he scored 15 goals in 27 appearances and conceded he grew more versatile with his positioning which he credited with being able to play across the park in the attacking midfield.

The winger now believes Victory have the ingredients to wreak havoc in the league this season as he attempts to improve on what he showed three years ago.

“Melbourne have always kept in touch and I had a good time here, it’s familiar to me and maybe it’ll help me get back to playing the type of football that I was playing while I was overseas, so that’s why I decided to come back to Melbourne,” he said.

“I think I’d be disappointed if I was exactly the same player I was when I left. I think I have learnt a few things over in Europe and hopefully that’ll be seen during the season.

“I believe it’s a good team and there’s been a few changes, but there’s still a few players here. A few of the young boys coming up have been playing more, some good players coming back, good players from the other teams in the A-League.

“I believe we can make a strong case for the title and I’m not going to come here and say we’re going to do it. I’m looking forward to playing football here again and we’ll see what happens.”

Rojas also admitted returning to Wellington was an option after beginning his A-League career in his home country.

“Of course it was always going to be a consideration as well because New Zealand is where I was born. It was in consideration, but Melbourne was where I thought would be best for me at the moment and I’m looking forward to next season,” he said.
