Torres found himself branded a £50million flop after scoring just five goals in almost a year since his record-breaking move from Liverpool.

But although the 27-year-old's latest goal drought dates back almost three months, he has gradually improved since being given a run in the side since the new year.

Saturday's 1-0 over Sunderland witnessed arguably his best display for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and fellow Spaniard Romeu told the club's official website, www.chelseafc.com: "People used to say that if he doesn't score then he is not playing good, but that is not true.

"He is playing good and he helped us to get the goals. He was playing very good in the game at Wolves and now he played another big game for us. Every ball, he fights and he is big player for us.

"If he is happy, if he is enjoying it on the pitch then he is going to play better and he helps us much more than if he is not enjoying it on the pitch.

"He is playing very good in the two last games and that is good news for us."

Chelsea's weekend victory saw them take a stranglehold on fourth place in the Barclays Premier League and moved them to within eight points of the leaders and six of third-placed Tottenham.

Romeu added: "We need to go on winning the games to get close to the teams on top of the league. We need to go step by step.

"Now the league is very difficult but you can never say the league is over - you have to fight to the end."

Meanwhile, Chelsea were expected to complete the £7million signing of Gary Cahill from Bolton today.

Josh McEachran was set to complete his loan move to Swansea today, with the midfielder confirming on Twitter he was travelling to Wales.

Fellow 18-year-old Romelu Lukaku has also expressed an interest in going out on loan - next season.

The striker, who has only played seven times for Chelsea since arriving from Anderlecht in August, must stay where he is this term as FIFA rules forbid players representing three clubs in a single campaign.

But Lukaku told Belga news agency: "If my situation at Chelsea does not evolve between now and the end of the season, it may be better to be loaned out for a season.

"A loan this season is not possible, as I have already played for two different clubs.

"If this situation endures, it might be better to play for another club for a year and then come back.

"But let's see what happens in the next six months. Many things could still change."
