Two-time World Cup winner Ronaldo has been ruled out of AC Milan's FIFA Club World Cup clash with Asian champions Urawa Reds on Thursday evening.
YOKOHAMA, December 12 (FIFA Club World Cup) -
Ronaldo will not be making a return to the Yokohama International Stadium where he scored twice against Germany as the Brazilians claimed a fifth world title in 2002.
"After talking to the doctors and Ronaldo, we decided to wait until Sunday," said Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti.
"I said I would decide on my own but if I receive advice from them I will listen to it. Ronaldo might be available for Sunday but for this game he's not even able to play for 15 minutes, so I took him out of the squad."
Milan are favourites to defeat the Japanese side and move through to the final, where they will meet either Boca Juniors or Etoile du Sahel on Sunday, but Ancelotti paid tribute to Reds after watching their quarter-final win over Iran's Sepahan.
"Urawa are quite aggressive and I think they have a good defence and are good on the counter-attack," he said.
"Their midfielders have a lot of dynamism. Also they are in a better position because they play at home so I'm sure they are in a good position to play their own game.
"Washington has a lot of attacking capabilities and he has experience and potential to cause trouble. However, Urawa have other players as well. Their midfield is dynamic and skilful and (Keita) Suzuki, (Yuki) Abe and (Makoto) Hasebe are great players."
Urawa coach Holger Osieck has no new injury worries following on from his side's 3-1 quarter-final win over Sepahan on Monday.
But rather than focusing on upsetting Milan, the German coach is hoping his team perform to the best of their abilities.
"I think we had a good start into the tournament and we showed some good football in the first game and I hope we can repeat this kind of performance against Milan," he said.
"To perform well is our first target. If we win or lose is decided on the things that happen in the game. I don't like to talk about percentages.
"All I want is that my team shows a good deal of enthusiasm and attitude and that we can show our qualities. That is my personal aim and my players are on the same page."
While Urawa go into the game as underdogs, the former J.League champions will be backed by the vast majority of the crowd and Osieck is relishing the opportunity for the nation's best-supported club to face off against the Serie A side.
"It's going to be a great game for our team," he said. "We are looking forward to tomorrow's game against what will be a great opponent for us to display another great performance, as we did against Sepahan in the first game of the tournament for us.
"We know our opponent is one of the top teams, not only in Europe but in the world. It's a great challenge for us but we are looking forward to it and I'm sure we are going to have a big crowd and great support from our outstanding fans. I hope it will be a great football event."
