Here, Phil Cadden takes a look at the excellence of both stars as they go head to head in Sunday's 2007 awards ceremony.

CRISTIANO RONALDO

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo has enjoyed a sensational season for the Barclays Premiership leaders and is deservedly in the running for the PFA Player of the Year award.

The 22-year-old's stunning displays, which have caught the eye of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, have been rewarded with a new five-year deal and his form even provoked comments from Pele as to whether the Portuguese international is now the best player in the world.

Ronaldo possesses everything in his game, combining fantastic upper body strength with devastating dribbling, blistering pace and mesmerising trickery.

The Manchester United number seven has played 30 games and has shown a high level of quality and consistency throughout the season.

Ronaldo's scored on the opening day against Fulham, heralding an avalanche of goals for the winger.

To date, Ronaldo is the second highest goalscorer in the Premiership this season with 16 goals.

Couple this with 15 assists, and the statistics prove his undoubted worth to United's quest to reclaim the title.

Over the Christmas period, Ronaldo hit a purple patch, scoring six goals in three matches against Aston Villa, Wigan and Reading, respectively. He has also an unselfish aspect to his game, demonstrated by three assists against Bolton at Old Trafford in March.

When the pressure at away venues has been on, Ronaldo has delivered with match-winning performances and crucial goals.

His equaliser at Reading rescued a 1-1 draw fro United while, in the match against Fulham, he scored a 90th-minute winner with a excellent solo effort to earn three vital points.

DIDIER DROGBA

Drogba has been a reliable pivot in Chelsea's hopes of winning the Premiership for the third successive year and is rightly in contention to win the top player's prize.

The Ivory Coast international's impressive performances have helped him establish a fearsome reputation across Europe and he is fast becoming one of the finest forwards in the game, boasting incredible strength, pace and explosive power, which makes him so difficult for defenders to handle.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed a rich run of goalscoring this season, with regular contributions throughout.

Drogba leads the Premiership goalscoring charts with 19 goals from 33 games and has chipped in with four assists.

With manager Jose Mourinho having the luxury of a multi-million squad at his disposal, it is testament to Drogba to say his performances for Chelsea this season have been head and shoulders above the rest.

Like Ronaldo, Drogba opened his account with a first-day goal against Manchester City. His scoring run continued with five goals from the opening seven games, including a magnificent match-winning turn and shot against Liverpool.

A hat-trick against Watford was pleasing but crucial winners against Newcastle at home and a thunderous 30 yard strike away to Everton will live longer in the memory.
