The Manchester United star is renowned for being involved in all aspects of the play in any area of the pitch.

But he concedes he may have to be more restrained when asked by new coach Fabio Capello to operate in a 4-4-1-1 formation to get the best out of his game and to benefit England.

Rooney impressed in the role during Capello's first match in charge as England overcame Switzerland 2-1 at Wembley with Joe Cole also looking sharp behind him.

The 22-year-old said: "I enjoyed playing as the only main striker. I've done it at times for Manchester United this season so I've no problem with that.

"I also had a few chances against Switzerland so I can't complain about that.

"Do you have to restrain yourself in that role? Sometimes you want to get a bit more involved in the game but the main area we've worked on this week is getting across to all the players that the team is the most important thing.

"If it means me staying up the pitch a bit more, and not getting involved as much as I want to, that is no problem to me if it benefits the team."

Rooney believes it was important for England to get off to a winning start under Capello in what was a new-look team.

Only three players survived from the starting line-up beaten by Croatia to end England's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008.

Rooney said: said: "The most important thing was the win. We've got a long time up until the World Cup qualifiers get going and we can work on things.

"It is always exciting when a new manager comes in and you want to show him that you can play well and you want to keep your place in the team and everyone worked hard.

"It was a different team to what everyone has seen in the last couple of years with England and I think the players who came in did really well and it is looking good for us.

"David Bentley did really well and has great vision and confidence and Jermaine Jenas did well also and capped it off with getting his goal, but everyone worked their socks off."
