Socceroo winger Mathew Leckie insists there were positives in the 4-0 loss to Brazil ... but Australia just couldn't capitalise in the final third.
Australia conceded just seconds after kick-off at the MCG last night when Bailey Wright gave up the ball which led to an instant Diego Souza goal, with two more goals bookended by a final goal with the last touch of the game.
The Brazil friendly was the Socceroos' final preparation for the 2017 Confederations Cup before they flew out of Melbourne for Russia today.
And despite being slaughtered by the world number one on home soil, Leckie said there were reasons for hope in Russia.
“Overall 4-0 looks bad but I think we held our own and showed we can be dangerous against the best,” Leckie said in Melbourne today.
“The start didn’t help but I think we recovered really well, we played our football and we got into good areas.
“We probably just lacked the danger in the front-third but overall I think for most of the game we competed and the goals we conceded were definitely something we could prevent.
"We copped two set-pieces that you can cancel out and the first goal too.”
Australia have Germany, Cameroon and Chile in the Confederations Cup before crucial World Cup qualifiers against Japan away and Thailand at home.
Leckie will be familiar with the Chileans after facing them in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and has five years Bundesliga experience to draw on from some of his German opponents.
He also took confidence out from the 2-2 friendly draw with Germany two years ago where eight players from the team will be involved at the tournament.
“I know a few of them, so I’m excited to get out there and be able to go back to Germany and say we beat them,” he said.
“You can never expect, you never know what’s coming in a game – football is different. You can prepare to a certain extent but I think anything can happen on the day.
“There’s a lot of young players there – Germany haven’t taken their best team so a lot of young talent will be very motivated to perform for their nation as well.
"It’s definitely going to be tough, so I think, if we can play to our best and cancel out the small mistakes then we’ve got a real chance.”
