FFA were staying mum today about the future of Sydney Rovers but reports say the fate of the western Sydney A-League franchise should be known by the end of the week.
The drawn out process means it’s almost impossible for the club to begin operations for next season after it was revealed in recent months that Rovers did not have the required funds.
Silence from Rovers in the market-place also rang alarm bells and FFA gave the would-be franchise a deadline of September 30 to show evidence they had the required funds.
The national body has been working feverishly on the proposed financial model since then.
"Management has almost completed the briefing. It will be handed to the board and we expect a quick resolution," the FFA said in a statement earlier this week.
The likely scenario is that if Rovers are given the green light – and that’s still no certainty – it will be for the following season. If it means it’s done right, this might be the smart option for this franchise based in the heartland of Sydney’s west.
The embarrassing turn of events has angered some with Canberra’s bid bosses - one of a number of competing franchise bidders - telling this website their bid had stronger financial backing and a structure already in place.
Crucially, the capital bid believed they were not reliant on the FFA to prop them up in the initial stages. This might be the case with Rovers.
And there have been those who’ve questioned the process of handing a licence on faith to an organisation which didn’t have the corporate backing in the first place.
That said, the Rovers consortium, led by advertising executive Ian Rowden and former Socceroos Charlie Yankos and Peter Tredinnick form an impressive off-field team. On paper.
However, if the delay is to happen, it might be a blessing in disguise. Rovers should be able to draw inspiration from the revolution in Newcastle headed by Nathan Tinkler.
The successful Hunter businessman is showing all A-League clubs why his model of ownership could well be the way of the future.
