A goalless draw against Coca-Cola Championship-bound Portsmouth yesterday highlighted Blackburn's failings in front of goal once again, as they failed to breach an injury-ravaged home defence.

They are tracking Portsmouth striker Aruna Dindane and could move for him this week, Allardyce confirmed following the stalemate.

The former Bolton and Newcastle boss has been impressed with his current team's resilience at the back and they achieved their 11th shutout of the season at Fratton Park.

Blackburn are currently 11th in the Barclays Premier League table, but Allardyce feels they are just one player away from finishing much higher.

He said: "The clean sheets are obviously the basis for any good season. The team that wins the league has the most clean sheets. It's not the one who scores the most goals.

"That's always your first priority because with our deficiencies in front of goal, we find ourselves just below the top half.

"We've put a really exciting young side together, which is going to grow hopefully.

"Our only deficiency is goalscoring ability and we needed more - not just from the strikers but the team as a whole.

"(David) Dunn is our leading scorer (with eight in the Premier League). But someone should have stepped up to the plate and scored more and if they had done that, we would have been comfortable in the top half.

"We've got to try to push on, but the season has been very satisfying in terms of progress made."

Allardyce confirmed his interest in Dindane, who has spent this season on loan at Portsmouth from French club Lens.

The Ivory Coast international has been frozen out at Fratton Park as cash-strapped Portsmouth are unable to pay the French side the £4 million they would be owed if he plays another game.

Rovers could sign Dindane and then loan him back to Portsmouth to finish the campaign, or they could take him now and wait until next season before seeing him play.

Allardyce said: "I would expect we will try to give a decision early next week.

"We want to see whether we can secure the transfer first and foremost and we'll see where we go from there."

Portsmouth boss Avram Grant remains "proud" of his side, despite their imminent relegation to the Championship.

Despite Portsmouth failing to beat Rovers, they have not been relegated yet, although Grant knows it is a matter of when rather than if they go down.

He is only sad the nine-point deduction imposed after the club entered administration did not give his team the chance to fight for their top-flight place until the end of the season.

The Israeli said: "We are not mathematicians. We knew what was happening off the pitch, but we've tried to do our job on the pitch.

"It doesn't matter whether it (relegation) happens this week or next week. I'm only sorry they didn't give us the chance to fight until the last moment.

"We are fighting and we are fighting, and I don't care when it happens.

"I'm just very, very proud of this team. There have been other teams down at the bottom with no problems in the last 10 or 20 years.

"If you compare them to us in terms of fighting spirit or any aspect of the football, I think I can be very proud."
