The 22-year-old Australian striker was immediately given a chance by Roeselare boss Dennis van Wijk having signed a loan deal with the Belgians from FC Twente last week.

And Roeselare, who are languishing in last in Belgium's top flight, began the game well with plenty of forward pressure, including a Rukavytsya chance where he flicked the ball over goalkeeper Wouter Biebauw only to be denied by the post.

But Mechelen's Julien Gorius delivered a sucker punch ten minutes before the break with a goal against the run of play.

Roeselare tried to respond after half-time with Rukavytsya going close from a corner, before Joeri Dequevy did equalise on 71 minutes.

Rukavytsya, who only made six appearances earlier this season for Twente, was replaced with 10 minutes to go, before Mechelen dramatically grabbed the winner through Aloys Nong after a long-ball to claim the points.

Elsewhere with Aussies abroad overnight, Tim Cahill hit the crossbar late as Everton stunned Roberto Mancini's Manchester City with a 2-0 win at Goodison Park in the English Premier League.

Cahill, who played a full game for the Toffees, troubled the City defence all afternoon before his late header which cannoned into the bar.

Socceroo Richard Garcia worked hard for Hull City, starting and playing 83 minutes, as the Tigers claimed a useful 0-0 draw at Tottenham.

In Scotland's Premier League, Scott McDonald was absent due to a hernia injury as Celtic dropped more points after a 1-1 draw with Falkirk in Glasgow. Rangers now lead the league by nine points.

Elsewhere, Danny Invincibile started and played 76 minutes as Kilmarnock slumped to a 3-0 home defeat by Motherwell, while Rocky Visconte was an unused sub in Hearts' 1-0 win over St Mirren.

And Trent McClenahan was a 59th minute substitute for Hamilton Academical as they lost 1-0 at home to Rangers, while fellow Aussie James Wesolowski was missing due to a hamstring injury.

In Portugal's Liga Sagres, young Aussie Jason Davidson made his first-team debut for Pacos Ferreira as a late substitute in their 1-1 draw at FC Porto.

In England's Championship, Adam Federici was the only Aussie in action playing a full game as Reading lost 2-1 to promotion-chasing Nottingham Forest.

Socceroo Rhys Williams missed Middlesbrough's 1-0 loss at Sheffield United due to a pelvic problem, while goalkeeper Brad Jones remains on the sidelines injured.

Nick Carle, who has been linked with a move to China, wasn't even in the Crystal Palace squad which won 1-0 at Plymouth. Curiously, the Eagles only had five subs on the bench.

In England's League One, Patrick Kisnorbo and Neil Kilkenny both put in full shifts for Leeds United as they slipped up to a 2-0 loss at Exeter City.

In England's League Two, 20-year-old Aussie midfielder Chris Herd had a lively game with a couple of chances for Lincoln City as they won 2-1 at Daniel Leach's Barnet. Herd is on loan at Lincoln from Premiership club Aston Villa.

Aaron Downes marked his successful return from a long-term injury with a solid game in defence for Chesterfield as they defeated Torquay 1-0, while Shane Cansdell-Sherriff put in a full shift for Shrewsbury as they drew 1-1 at Burton Albion.

Finally in England's Blue Square Premier League, 21-year-old James Meredith put in a full game for York City as they beat Hayes & Yeading United 4-1 to stay in the promotion race.
