Klose scored just three goals for Bayern yet found the back of the net four times for Germany at the World Cup.

Watching Klose in such form was "frustrating", according to Rummenigge, who claims Klose made more of an effort in South Africa than he had done all season for the club who pays his wages.

"Miro was criticised very harshly before the World Cup and the media said Cacau should have played ahead of him," he explained.

"So he said he was going to work hard and he lost five kilos.

"At this point, I asked myself: 'does he not have to work hard for FC Bayern and shouldn't you be at your ideal weight for them?'

"It is not on that he suddenly starts working hard for the national team and at Bayern, where he earns his money, he has a different approach."

Klose faces another frustrating season on the sidelines at Bayern, where Ivica Olic and Thomas Muller are ahead of him in the pecking order, and there has been talk of him being sold this summer.

Likewise, Mario Gomez has failed to live up to expectations since joining from Stuttgart for a club record fee of 30 million euros and Rummenigge was equally critical of his first year with the club.

"In November and December last year, he played well and I can remember the games against Monchengladbach, Hertha or Juventus when we all thought that he had clicked," he told Sport Bild magazine.

"Not only was he scoring goals, but he was playing the football we wanted to see from him too.

"Then something happened which we have not understood to this day."
