Ryal, 20,l was charged last May with engaging in a sexual act with a girl under the age of 14, with the incident alleged to have happened during January 2008 when Ryall played for Melbourne Victory.

But in a hearing at Sydney's Downing District Court on Friday morning, the DPP said that the proceedings would not continue.

Sydney FC has welcomed the decision.

"This is a tremendous relief for Sebastian," said chief executive Edwin Lugt. "Throughout the process he has shown great resolve to be able to play an integral part of Sydney FC's success last year while trying to clear his name.

"Everyone at Sydney FC is happy for Sebastian and now we all look forward to a successful season."

Despite the good news, Ryall may still ponder what may have been, as the charges last May led to him being stood down from the Young Socceroos side that competed in the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt last year.
