Australia was eliminated from Russia 2018 following a 2-0 loss to Peru in Sochi on Wednesday morning.

The Socceroos took one point from their three games with many players holding their heads up high for the performances against France, Denmark and Peru.

Ryan said failing to capitalise on chances was a part of football and it cost them.

“You just see it as a learning experience playing at the highest level, being good for the majority of games isn’t good enough at this level,” Ryan said post-match.

“You have to be good for the entire game - with our opposition at this level, all it takes is one moment switching off or being slack and they’re very clinical and they punish you.

“That’s been the story of our tournament, when the opposition has got into forward areas, they’ve been very lethal in converting their chances into goals, unfortunately for us. Perhaps the opposition took their chances and we didn’t.

“We want to be successful and that’s what we set out to do. In sport, it’s a results-based game. That’s what you judge success on, but there are ways you can go about losing as well and I’m proud of the fact our guys went out there and gave our all.

“We’re disappointed, we don’t want to be going home, but the reality is we are.”

The Brighton & Hove Albion gloveman is hopeful Russia 2018 will be a lesson to the group.

“We had the reputation out of all the countries that no one wants to play Australia, that we were always going to make it difficult for them and they’d have to earn it,” he said.

“Hopefully we can learn from our experience here and our experience playing at a tournament like this for everyone involved can hopefully lead to us improving and growing as people.”

Coach Bert van Marwijk stuck with the same backline in all three games, with Mark Milligan and Trent Sainsbury standing out for Australia.

Ryan praised the back four and said they were great throughout the tournament.

“They limited opposition of the highest quality to very limited chances,” Ryan said.

“With a bit more luck, we could’ve kept a clean sheet or two throughout the tournament, but it wasn’t meant to be.”
