Australia goalkeeper always confident during nail biting World Cup qualifier in Adelaide
Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan insists there were no real concerns that they would slip up against Saudi Arabia in their World Cup qualifier on Thursday night - despite finding themselves deadlocked at half-time.
Tom Rogic fired home the winner from long range in the second-half after the Australian defence looked leaky at times.
Ryan described his own performance in the 3-2 victory as “a funny one”, but reckons there was no fear among the players at half-time that they would let the game slip away.
“No, there was still half the game to go. We got ourselves in a commanding position both times and we conceded scrappy goals,” Ryan said post-match.
“We just knew if we tidied that up and be a bit more efficient with the ball and defence, probably tighten a bit, we were confident we could close the game out and we managed to do that.”
Tomi Juric opened the scoring, capitalising on an error by the Saudi goalkeeper, before finding the net again shortly in the first-half.
The Saudis equalised twice but Ryan felt the composure was always there to get three crucial points on the road to the 2018 World Cup.
“We faced the difficulties out there and good teams find a way to win when they need to and we managed to do that," he added.
“I thought we started really well, we pressed them early, got the early goal in the team they punished us and got in too easily and in the end we got the result we needed.”
Ryan also gave no indication he would be heading to newly promoted Premier League team Brighton and Hove Albion despite the rumours circulating in recent days.
He added: “I have a contract with Valencia and it’s still like that at the moment.”
