Wins over Hungary and Chechia have sent the Socceroos to Russia 2018 brimming with confidence and ready to face France in their opening World Cup match, keeper Mat Ryan said today.
Australia backed up a convincing 4-0 thrashing of the Czechs with a reassuring 2-1 win against a valiant Magyar side on Saturday.
And Ryan believes the intense training sessions, combined with the confidence-building warm up results, have set the Socceroos up nicely for their World Cup opener.
“I read a crazy stat before the Czech game that we hadn’t won in Europe in quite some time,” Ryan told FourFourTwo at the Socceroos first press conference in Kazan today.
“And you know we managed to do that twice in a couple of weeks now. We really feel like we are progressing and benefiting from this time together in our mini camp there in Turkey.
“For myself, and the squad, that progress has been out of sight.”
Under new coach Bert van Marwijk and his Dutch team of assistants, including former Dutch star Mark van Bommel, the Socceroos have been transitioning from former coach Ange Postecoglou’s ambitious attacking, three at the back, strategy to a more conservative approach.
But Ryan sang the praises of the Dutch team in charge at Russia 2018.
“Getting to terms with the technical stuff and the coaching staff, and what they want from us – it’s those experiences in the training sessions and in the games against Czech Republic and Hungary,” said Ryan.
“Situations and circumstances are being played out where perhaps we might have questions on how they want us to react or do better, or what we do well...
“With every game that we’re playing, and in every analysis, those questions are getting answered.”
He added: “I’m feeling pretty confident at this stage.
“I’ve an enormous belief in us as a squad that we can go and be success against whoever we’re gonna come up against.”
