Goalkeeper Mat Ryan says he wants to return to Valencia CF next season and stake his claim for the club’s number one shirt.
Ryan joined Racing Genk on loan from the Spanish outfit in January in a bid for regular playing time. Since then the Socceroo has racked up 21 appearances for the Belgian side in all competitions.
He has another four years to run on the six-year contract he signed with Valencia in July 2015.
The 25-year old Socceroo has been linked to a move to the English Premier League and newly promoted Brighton and Hove Albion for next season, and has also been attracting interest from other European clubs.
But Ryan said his aim is to gain a starting place with Los Che, who recently announced former Sevilla and Villarreal coach Marcelino as their new manager.
“They just announced a new coach, he’s a coach with a lot of experience,” he told FourFourTwo.
“My goal at the moment is to be the number one and prove myself at Valencia and in La Liga. It’s a big club and I’m very lucky to have a contract there."
Ryan has made 10 first-appearances at Valencia in the past two years. The Australian is one of two Valencia goalkeepers on loan, with Yoel currently with Eibar until June 30, with Diego Alves and Jaume Domenech all on Los Che’s books.
Ryan said he had learned a lot in his 18 months at the Mestella and developed as a player.
“I think I did well in the appearances I had for Valencia, apart from the 7-0 against Barcelona (in February 2016)," he said.
"What I’ve learned is that all the teams have quality, they all have players who can hurt you. You have to respect very team. It’s a competition where I want to test myself."
Ryan's Genk play Roeselare at home tonight and then KSC Lokeren on Saturday in the Belgian Jupiler League playoffs. The Blauw-Wit are batling for a place in Europe next season.
