Williams, who joined English side Barnsley from Fulham a year ago, has been out of action since January with osteitis pubis. The 22-year old has only played six games for the Tykes since he signed for the club.

Ryan Williams is the younger brother of Socceroo Rhys Williams, who has faced his own severe injury battles over the past six years

Williams missed out on Barnsley’s successful promotion campaign into the Championship from League One and the club winning the Football League Trophy against Oxford United. He told FourFourTwo his past seven months have been a “bloody nightmare”.

“Imagine signing at your new club and not being able to play pretty much the whole season then miss out on two Wembley finals which they both won,” he said.

“Bloody nightmare, makes me feel sick when I think what Rhys has been through. I’m getting there slowly now though, OP injuries are a ball ache."

At 22 years of age Ryan has time on his side to get back on the park, but the WA product has no timeframe at this point as to when he will get back to playing.

“I’m not sure how long, it’s hard to say,” Williams said.

“I'm running and doing loads of rehab and gym work and Pilates.”

The wide midfielder is desperate to get back playing and show the Barnsley fans what he can do after such a long lay-off.

“That's exactly it and especially being in the Championship now,” he admits.

The Tykes surprised many by beating Millwall at Wembley to secure promotion from League One after finishing sixth. Williams admits he is unsure how the club will fare this season, which starts this Saturday away at Ipswich Town.

Many have tipped Barnsley to go straight back down, but the winger believes the team has the potential to avoid the drop.

He added: “I can't really say because I haven't seen much of training or the games they've played, but if we play like we did last season I think we will do well.”
