The Frenchman moved to the Stadium of Light in the off-season on a free transfer after his contract expired at Tottenham.

Despite struggling to find the net, Saha insists he is not concerned about his form and is hopeful of getting underway for Martin O'Neill's side in the near future.

He told the Sunderland Echo: "It was a really good to get a start on Tuesday, it's been a long time. I had 90 minutes for the reserves last week and it's getting there.

"I was pleased with the win too. As a striker, you always want to win and to score. I'm getting chances which is always promising for a striker.

"The main thing is to get them and to score them. Hopefully that will happen soon. I'm not worried."

The 34-year-old has struggled for time on the pitch since his move to Sunderland due to form of fellow new signing Steven Fletcher, who has scored four goals in three games for the club.

Saha said he always wanted to play but will do what is in the best interests of the team.

"Steven Fletcher has done great in the first few games – scoring goals and put in a great performance. But we need to score more goals to win games and if we can do that, I'm sure we'll be fine," he said.

"The main thing is the result. As a professional, I'm motivated to win games. On a personal level, you always want to play, but I'm pleased to contribute in any way I can."

Sunderland have yet to register their first win of the season in the English Premier League, drawing all four of their games so far.

And despite winning both their League Cup games against Morecambe and MK Dons, Saha feels it is essential they get underway in the top flight as soon as possible.

"We need that first win," Saha said. "We've been taking baby steps so far, but we need a proper win.

"It was a tough start on Tuesday after going down to 10 men but we expected MK Dons to play some good football.

"So sure, it's a great result and we did okay. We played very professionally and at the end we deserved the win."
