Trent Sainsbury isn't losing sleep worrying about the prospect of having Chile's awesome attacking duo Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez running at him, ahead of the Socceroos' must-win clash.
Australia and La Roja lock horns on Sunday (Monday morning AEST) in Moscow in the Confederations Cup. If the Socceroos do not win by at least two goals, then they will be out of the tournament.
But laid-back defender Sainsbury hasn't been kept awake at night worrying about the likes of Sanchez and Vidal. The world-class pair, who ply their trade for Arsenal and Bayern Munich respectively, have scored a combined total of 61 goals in 201 matches for the Chilean national team.
Sainsbury said the green and gold will "embrace" the challenge of facing them.
“It’s going to be a nice challenge,” he said.
“Every team in the world would love to have those two in their side so we’re going to embrace it. Do our best to stop them causing a lot of trouble."
To defeat Chile Australia will need to tighten up at the back, after coughing up eight goals in its past three games.
"The Brazil game, obviously we conceded four, but we made six subs in about five minutes, so it’s a little difficult,” Sainsbury said.
“Obviously it’s not nice as a defender to concede goals. But at the same time we’re still scoring goals, which is always a positive and we’re creating a lot of chances. That’s the objective of this team – to be really offensive and attack-minded.
"Further down the track we’ll be the team that everyone fears to face.... I know this team is so close to doing something special.”
The Socceroos next match after the Confederations Cup is away against Japan in August in a hugely important World Cup qualifier. But Sainsbury insists Australia is focused purely on Chile, not what lies ahead in the future.
"I haven’t thought that far ahead," the 25-year old centre back said.
"We’re definitely preparing for the game against Chile. We haven’t thought about the next game after that, it’s just one game at a time with us at the moment."
