Sam Kerr says consistency is the key for the Matildas in the lead-up to the 2018 Asian Cup in Jordan and the 2019 World Cup in France.
The Matildas have had an enjoyable year including taking out the 2017 Tournament of Nations, finishing fourth in the Algarve Cup and recently garnering back-to-back friendly wins over Brazil and China on home soil.
In the past two years depth was an issue in the Matildas and Kerr now believes a win in a major tournament is very feasible.
“I think it was a good year, it just sucks it wasn't a tournament year, if we had won seven games in a row we probably would've won a World Cup,” Kerr said.
“That's the challenge, to keep going throughout the year next year.
“It's good signs, but in a World Cup you have to play that amount and more, so it's good preparation and we're moving in the right direction.
“We think we can get fitter and just keep progressing, not take a step backwards and I think this year we've been on the up.
“We have a bit of time away from each other now which is difficult. We just need to try and keep progressing in our clubs and stay fit and healthy.”
The Perth Glory striker also capped off her stunning 2017 form in style with a brace in Australia's 5-1 over China in Geelong on Sunday.
However, the message from the Matildas camp was that the score was not a true reflection of the game.
Kerr also felt she was a bit lucky to bag two goals.
“I didn't think my game was that good,” she said. “That's the joy of being a striker. You score two goals and it's all OK.
“I'll watch the video back because I wasn't quite happy with my movement and I didn't think I was on the ball enough.
“We've said we want to win games when we're not playing our best football and I thought China did really well.
“We just overpowered them in the end. Our first few touches were a bit off, but that happens.”
