The Wanderers dominated play however a blunder at the back between Dimas and Aritz Borda gifted an opportunity to Victory which saw Besart Berisha and Ollie Bozanic punish the visitors.

Western Sydney have now conceded 13 goals in six games with only one win for A-League season 2016/17.

Neville: Santa would tackle his mum for a goal

While Santalab lamented the blunders in the defensive half, he believed the performances were strong enough to eventually turn their form around.

“I thought before we conceded the goal we were absolutely outstanding,” Santalab told FourFourTwo.

“When you gift teams goals it’s always difficult to come back and especially against Victory at home. We've got to stop making mistakes and as soon as we do that, we’ll start winning games that’s for sure because our general play was fantastic.

“I wouldn’t say our defence is a shambles, but what happens is when you consistently gift the opposition a goal, your confidence drops. We need to regroup and erase those mistakes very quickly.

“We made a sloppy pass at the back and that’s from our error, we did one against the Central Coast, we were a little bit slack against the Jets as well at the back and it’s little errors at the back we need to erase and we need to put our chances away when they come.”

It is unclear whether Santalab will take part in next week’s clash against Melbourne City after being substituted for Kerem Bulut at half-time with a calf injury.

“I felt it midway through the first half and I went down, just wanted to get some assessment from the physio and just rode it out until halftime and then came off,” he said.

“It just doesn’t feel the best at the moment, so we’ll see what the scans suggest, it’s too early to say with next week, it doesn’t feel good now.”

On a humorous note, Santalab took a light-hearted view on team-mate Scott Neville’s comments during the week about his hunger for goals would have him slide tackle his own mother for a goal.

“I think that was just a bit of banter from Scotty,” Santalab said.

“I wasn’t too happy about that one, I let him know about it but I didn’t have to call mum, I reckon she’ll be alright.”
