Apology issued after Saudi Arabia players fail to line up for minute's silence
Saudi Arabia have officially apologised after many of their players failed to line up in respect for those killed in the recent London terror attack.
A minute’s silence was held before Thursday night’s World Cup qualifier against Australia in Adelaide, with the Socceroos linking arms on the centre circle.
But pictures showed only Salman Al Faraj initially lining up for Saudi Arabia in the traditional western tribute, while most of his team-mates walked around the pitch getting into their tactical positions.
Two Australians lost their lives in the terror attack last weekend and many fans were angry at the apparent lack of respect.
But Saudi officials have now said sorry for the incident – albeit without offering any explanation why the players did not observe the moment in the usual manner.
“The Saudi Arabian Football Federation deeply regrets and unreservedly apologises for any offence caused by the failure of some members of the representative team of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to formally observe the one minute's silence in memory of the victims of the London terrorist attack on 3 June 2017, prior to the World Cup Qualifying match against Australia in Adelaide,” they said in a statement.
“The players did not intend any disrespect to the memories of the victims or to cause upset to their families, friends or any individual affected by the atrocity.
“The Saudi Arabian Football Federation condemns all acts of terrorism and extremism and extends its sincerest condolences to the families of all the victims and to the Government and people of the United Kingdom.”
The FFA had earlier revealed they made an official request to the Saudi FA to hold the minute’s silence, which was approved – although they were advised the tradition was not in keeping with Saudi culture.
Australia went on to win the match 3-2 thanks to two goals from Tomi Juric and a brilliant effort from Tom Rogic.
