The Socceroos remain in contention for Russia following Saudi Arabia’s shock 2-1 loss to UAE.
Attentions now turns to the vital clash with Japan on Thursday night. If Australia wins, they are off to Russia.
Australia had sat third and level on points with the Saudis in second.
However, an Aussie win would see them secure first place on 19 points with Japan on 17 and Saudi Arabia on 16.
If that happened, Australia will secure its place prior to facing Thailand in Melbourne next Tuesday.
Should Australia draw with Japan, they would need to beat Thailand next week to guarantee a place at Russia.
A loss to Japan would leave the Socceroos vulnerable and needing the Samurai Blue to beat Saudi Arabia should the Aussies down Thailand next week.
Football Federation Australia chief David Gallop today encouraged football fans to rally around their TV sets on Thursday evening to support Australia’s men’s national team.
“Australian football has witnessed many historic nights and Thursday evening could be another,” Gallop said. “Among the sea of Japanese support in Saitama will be a few hundred passionate Socceroos fans, while in Australia we’re hoping to see strong support from fans watching the game live in prime time.
“Next Tuesday’s game against Thailand may also be pivotal, so anyone thinking of going to the match at Melbourne rectangular stadium should purchase their tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment."
