The 35-year-old midfielder is in the final year of his contract at Pride Park and is already moving towards a lucrative career in the media.

Savage is to present the BBC Radio Five show '606' on Saturday evenings during the forthcoming campaign.

His aim is to try to win a new deal with the Rams but the former Welsh international will hang up his boots if that is not forthcoming.

Savage, currently promoting his new autobiography 'Savage!', told Press Association Sport: "Will this be my last season? It all depends on how I perform this season.

"I want Derby to be my last club and I want to finish on a high.

"I don't really want to go down the leagues and get kicked all over the place by young up-and-coming players.

"If I don't get another contract at Derby this season, that will probably be it but my aim is to earn a new contract here. If I don't it could possibly well be."

Savage insists that being a footballer and not a media personality remains his number one priority.

He said: "The '606' show is an opportunity which Nigel Clough (Derby manager) has let me do.

"He respects me as a person and as a player and he knows it won't jeopardise how I perform for Derby.

"The first programme is on Saturday. It's something I'll give 100% to - like my football.

"But first and foremost I'm a Derby player and if the gaffer said 'you are doing too much' I'd stop it."
